Just a quick update on the current state of me, should anyone be curious.
The Wonder Machine has arrived, and yes, Biff the Laptop is well and truly dead. It's going to take another couple thousand years and an angel with superhero aspirations to bring him back. The good news is, the newbie is performing well thus far, and I'm thinking of calling him Joshua. No, I'm not all that original.
The rest of my world is pretty much consumed with The Teeth. Nine days until the written form is due. Eek.
On the plus side, in two weeks, there will only be a pair of finals and a paper between me and freedom (otherwise known as unemployment). *g* Also, as of tonight, there is now DSL access in the ancestral home, wonder of wonders, so I shouldn't disappear from the online zone post-graduation. Plus, today was the last of the dissection labs, so no more smelling like preservatives for a while. Yay! Even if I did entirely fail to remember today's quiz until I showed up to find the usual last-minute hallway cram session. Gotta love my friends, who took one look at my stunned face and knew just how screwed I was, and then proceded to sooth me anyway. Thanks, guys.
Someday, I will be a real girl again. In the meantime...
Wish me luck, and see you all when the dust settles.

"It's so... shiny. I just - hey, what does this do? Ooooo! Look at that." Silence for a while.
"Honey?"
"Shiny."

a fish story.
Date: 2006-04-19 07:48 am (UTC)Once, we dissected the same dogfish for six weeks. The day we did the neural nerves dissection my lab partner and I spent three hours patiently shaving away cartilage, looking for the otic and vagus nerves, hands and backs and squint-muscles all at the spasm. We went home smelling of formalin and people actually edged away from us as we walked. I couldn't eat fish for a year. Well over a year later, the smell of formalin could make me wheeze.
Behold, the power of Biology! *waves hi to Joshie* Also Silicon.
Re: a fish story.
Date: 2006-04-19 09:48 pm (UTC)Our victim of choice is the cat, affectionately known as the Giant Naked Turkey. Except that this one is rather... anemic. As much as we've cursed its scrawny build for the musculature, though, it proved to be very well ordered internally. So, overall, yay. Half the fun of dissections is the classroom experience, of course. The day we did eyes was particularly humorous (and yes, I always type humerous first); there were some downright pitiful wails from various stations in the room.
The formalin thing... I always spend the first two weeks of dissections sick as a dog until my body gets used to the smell. The weather has finally gotten pleasant enough to allow the airing out of my room post-lab, which is a blessing. Even bagged and in the closet, the lab gear was making its presence known. *g*
The combination of Biology and Silicon is indeed a wonderous thing. And Josh is quite personable, and most likely waves back in his own binary fashion. *g*
Finally, the really good news: the department has taken pity on us all and declared an extension on theses until May 5th. My joy knows no bounds. (Also, in a truly circuitous route, we have returned once more to fish, since my world is all paleoichthiologically oriented these days. Hee.)

Date: 2006-04-20 02:08 am (UTC)Joshua is very much a success. He just chuggs along, and I am thrilled. Sorry to hear about your continued computing woes, but glad that the laptop is stepping up to the plate. Yay for portable electronic joy!

Date: 2006-04-20 03:13 am (UTC)The other computer has been trouble since the day it first walked through the door. I don't care what people say about them being inanimate input machines, this one is malicious. There is sniggering and laughter going on in that casing.
I know the sensation with the writing. You just have to write it without thinking about anything remotely related to getting it published in daylight, and then trust that everyone who has said nice things about it are not drug-takng-unreliable-suck-ups, and are telling the truth. Difficult!
I've worked before and decided that study was the better option. *nod*
