Originally, he was supposed to be much more of a bastard. He was going to be a relatively mediocre jerk of a ghost, and he would have left Sam there with no regrets until Dean came into the picture. And then I started writing in his voice, and he was someone else entirely. I couldn't help liking him, and the story had to be changed accordingly. And then Tommy showed up and surprised the daylights out of us both :>
