As much as I like a happy ending, I can see Rodney so disappointed, cut to the core even, that John lost hope. Not entirely, but he, to and extent, resigned himself to that situation.

It doesn't speak well of Rodney. Doesn't show a level of trust...

I'm not being very eloquent about it, but I think your story captures that feeling wonderfully!
